What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, light touch therapy which releases tensions deep within the body. It is beneficial to relieve pain and dysfunction and to improve the health and well-being of the whole body, mind and spirit.
The essence of Craniosacral Therapy is the art of intuitive listening and perception. As a Craniosacral Therapist, I focus on connecting to and supporting the intelligence, wisdom and innate self healing capacities of your magnificent human system.
How does it work?
The Craniosacral system is comprised of the membranes and the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects and nourishes the brain and spinal cord, it is intimately and directly connected with the central nervous system. Because of this there is almost no system or part of the body that is not influenced by the Craniosacral system!
Every day, stresses (and or especially traumatic stresses) bring on strains and changes in our bodies that it must work to compensate for; causing the Craniosacral system and muscles, joints and organs to tighten and distort. Restrictions can form around the brain and spinal cord, causing our central nervous system function to be depressed and potentially affecting every other system it interacts with.
Craniosacral Therapy reaches the core of our body and being. Using a gentle listening touch, the therapist feels and releases tensions and imbalances in the Craniosacral system itself, in and around the brain, the dural tube, and spinal cord, and also outside the Craniosacral system to the rest of the body…the muscles, soft tissues, joints and organs. The therapist may also use direction of energy or other therapy modalities to release these restrictions extrinsic to the Craniosacral system. In this way, CST, enhances and vitalized our bodies innate ability to self-correct and self heal.
Craniosacral Therapy is beneficial to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions including chronic pain and sports injures, stroke and neurological impairment.
What Conditions Does CST Address?
Here are just some of the conditions that Craniosacral Therapy can help to alleviate:
- Migraines and Headaches
- Neck and back Pain
- Stress and Tension-Related Disorders
- Infant and Childhood Disorders
- Chronic Fatigue
- TMJ Syndrome
- Motor Coordination Impairments
What Can I Expect from a Session?
The average CST session can be held in a quiet, private place. You will remain fully clothed as you rest on a comfortable, padded table.
The therapist will begin by softly touching key parts of your body to gauge the rhythm and fluid you’ve built-up around your central nervous system.
By carefully listening with the hands to locate areas of weak fluid flow or tissue motion, the therapist can locate those places of weakness through the entire body, originating at the source of the dysfunction. Afterward, delicate manual techniques are used to relieve those pressure places, improving overall flow and function of your central nervous system.
This session can last up to 90 minutes. It can be performed by itself, or integrated with other therapies to enhance healing potential.
Some Things You May Experience During a Session
Experiences will vary broadly from client to client, and from session to session, some of the possibilities are:
- deep relaxation, even falling into sleep
- recalling memories
- expressing emotions
- experience of sensations, new awareness’s or insights
Somato Emotional Release is the name given to a process in which the practitioner supports the client’s limbs and spine while facilitating the release of accumulated tensions in the tissues which we call energy cysts. During this release, the client might recall circumstances surrounding a past shock, trauma or injury. This awareness and releasing of past hurts, facilitates the body in reorienting its physical and energy systems.
Following a Session
The immediate results can also be diverse:
- Some may experience the desire to sleep for many hours after a session,
- While others may experience an increase in energy.
- Reduction of Pain
- Increase in Function
Some of these benefits may be experienced immediately after a session, or they may develop gradually over a few days. Craniosacral Therapy helps the body to reconnect with its natural healing processes. and it is not uncommon for improvements to continue some weeks after the session. For some there may even be a reorganization phase as the body adapts to the release of previously held patterns.
